Broad Road by MBLA Architects + Urbanists

The development of 45 apartments and an adjoining car park for 440 vehicles is located on a key site in Sale Town Centre.  The design uses the new offices of the Borough Council as a foil to establish an urban strategy for a long building.  Apartments are arranged in an L shaped form giving each apartment and townhouse the best amenity from the site’s orientation.  All residential units are accessed by galleries from a single core and the 8 units that sit around the lower level courtyard space each have their own private garden.  The south west corner of the site is reinforced and dramatised by the prow of the building which serves to set up a strong visual link with the Metrolink station across the road whilst responding to the dynamic of the adjacent tram lines. The building’s envelope of white brick further underlines its relation with the council offices to the west of the site whilst complementing the predominanltly rich mixture of brickwork characteristic of the area’s building stock.
