LITTLE ALEX

Moss Side, Manchester (2006)

Little Alex by MBLA Architects + Urbanists

The Little Alex was a public house formerly occupying the site.  The immediate area is a contrast between the new, thriving area of Hulme and the traditional 1960s style terrace council houses of the once notorious Alexandra Park estate. MBLA wanted to create a landmark development as the location is critical forming a new gateway into Moss Side.  Influenced by projects in the Netherlands we believed that this was an ideal opportunity to determine a contemporary architectural style that would act as a catalyst for wider investment.  The development was designed to a green agenda, exceeding Building Regulations energy performance and incorporating solar panels and a grey water system.  The internal arrangement of the dwellings is either a traditional duplex layout or an interlocking duplex that is typical in many Dutch housing projects.
