The brief to design a new building rather than refurbishing the former library, allowed for the resolution of the fundamental demands of circulation, sound control, natural daylight penetration, and environmenal, security, accessibility and future proofing issues.Close liaison with key members of the Local Authority during all stages of design development as well as library staff and Knowsley Borough Architects Department has resulted in a low running costs, low maintenance building of a responsive, tranquil environment appropriate to its function and the Local Authoritie’s aspirations.
A new exhibition court links the new library to the existing Huyton Suite. This new space provides the opportunity to display works by artists, schools and community groups, together with a permanent exhibition about Huyton. Arts Lottery funding provided for art works to be incorporated within the fabric of the new building. The building has proved so successful that it became the first civic library to open seven days a week.
