Sunny Hill

Windermere, Cumbria (2009)

The main wing of the house is an elongated rectangular form with a simple pitched roof at 40º, taking its cue from traditional vernacular Lakeland architecture.  To the south the horizontal form of the roof is punctuated by the chimney stack, which is expressed as a projecting  buttress at ground level.  A projecting  window to the library on the first floor  provides for stunning panoramic views over the nearby lake.  The roof  element is extended to provide for weather protection and solar shading to the master bedroom’s balcony at first floor level.

The external walls of the house consist of a combination of white rough cast render and Cumbrian stone – traditional vernacular building materials, whilst large areas of glazing and  sliding screens provide for and reinforce connectivity between interior and exterior spaces whilst ensuring good natural daylight penetration.
