Smithfield, Manchester (2005)

Located 5 minutes walk from the city centre in the Smithfield conservation area, the development was designed to repair the urban gird, complete the matrix of back of pavement buildings defining the narrow street pattern characteristic of the area and thereby re-establish the historic urban grain of the area. The building’s scale, proportion and massing are ordered to complement and enhance those of the existing urban fabric in a contemporary manner.  The building’s composition is ordered to provide a consistent, rigorous, coherent and honest architectural expression within its post-industrial context.
